Heating and cooling are not optional in Southern Arizona. When your system breaks down in July or on a cold January night, you need someone fast, but the company you choose will also decide how much you pay and how long your system lasts. These nine questions help you hire with confidence.

1. Are you licensed with the Arizona ROC?

In Arizona, HVAC contractors must hold a license from the Registrar of Contractors. You can look up any company for free on the ROC website and see whether the license is active and whether there are complaints. Arctic Cowboy's license is AZ ROC #359497.

2. Are you bonded and insured?

Insurance protects you if someone is hurt on your property or something is damaged during the job. A professional company will confirm it without hesitation.

3. Will I get a written estimate?

A good estimate lists the equipment brand and model, the work included, the warranty and the total price, with no surprises later. If a quote is only given verbally, ask for it in writing.

4. How do you decide what size system I need?

Sizing matters a lot in the desert. A system that is too big turns on and off constantly; one that is too small runs nonstop in July. A contractor should look at your home, not just copy the size of the old unit. Brandon runs a load calculation before every install as an internal double check.

5. What warranties come with the work?

Ask about both the manufacturer warranty on the equipment and the warranty on the installation itself, and whether the company registers the equipment for you. Some manufacturer warranties are only extended when the system is installed by an authorized dealer. For example, Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealers can offer a 12-year parts and compressor warranty on qualifying systems.

6. Do you recommend repair or replacement, and why?

Be careful with any company that jumps straight to a full replacement on the first visit without showing you what failed. An honest technician explains the problem, tells you whether a repair makes sense, and lets you decide. Our guide on repair versus replacement walks through the signs.

7. What do your recent reviews say?

Read the most recent reviews on Google, not only the star rating. Look for comments about punctuality, clear explanations and fair pricing, and pay attention to how the company responds when something goes wrong.

8. Do you offer emergency service and maintenance?

Breakdowns rarely happen at a convenient time. Ask whether the company offers after-hours help for urgent problems and a maintenance plan, so the same team knows your system year after year.

9. Are financing options clear?

If you are replacing a system, ask what financing is available, whether checking your options affects your credit, and what happens when a promotional period ends. A good company explains the terms plainly and never uses financing to push a bigger sale.

Red flags to watch for

  • No license number, or a license that does not match the company name
  • Pressure to sign the same day, or a "today only" price
  • Scare tactics about safety without showing you the problem
  • A quote with no brand, model or warranty listed
  • Large cash deposits up front
